Things to do in Brown County Indiana before you die. Okay, so this is not an extensive list of things to do, more like one thing that you just have to do if you find yourself in the area for a day or two.
Many people brag about going to IMAX theaters, old theaters, digital theaters, the world's largest theater, dinner theaters, adult theaters, or even famous/infamous theaters. What about the smallest theater in North America? Or the 3rd smallest theater in the world? I did that just this last weekend.
Welcome to the Lotus Petal Cinema in Nashville, Indiana:
Unlike many theaters that boast large lobbies, and parking lots designed to hold thousands of cars, this theater barely has a lobby, has no parking lot, and seats 35 people comfortably. No that is not a typo, I said thirty-five. On Saturday evening (January 3rd, 2009) my girlfriend and I made our way to see "The Duchess" at the 8:30 showing. We got there a little early and actually met the owner and toured his gallery just behind the theater.
So what can you say about the LPC? 35 seats. Fresh popcorn, friendly and funny counter staff, candy, drinks, and one of the most enjoyable, little, off the beaten path movie theaters you can find.
Sure they were out of bottled water that evening, but if that was the only issue that I had, then I wish that I had the same positive experience in some of the bigger places I have watched movies.
The theater itself is very clean, well maintained, it has real surround sound (not too hard to pull off in a room the size of a small living room), and it actually has a digital projector system. So, the image was better quality than most movie theaters have.
Considering that we were in town during their off season for tourist activities, it was great to find the theater open at all. It was also fun to have to whole place to ourselves.
The movie was presented perfectly, in a small very cozy space; it almost makes you forget that you are in a theater at all. The price of the tickets was quite affordable, as were the snacks from the concession stand. And I must say, it was nice to exit a theater and not have to wait for 500 other people to decide to move before being able to get out the door. I guarantee if I am in town again, I will defiantly make a point to swing by and catch another movie there.
For more images of the theater stop by their photo gallery on their main site.
Wednesday I received my latest toy in the mail it was my latest digital camera. My new toy is the Pentax Optio WP 5 MegaPixal camera. Not only is this my smallest digital camera (you can see the scale next to one of my 5" Angry Bunny Stickers); but is has some cool features that may not be immediately obvious at first glance.
First of all, as with many of the point-n-shoot compact digital cameras, this one not only takes photo, it is also a mini camcorder with audio, and it can also be used as an audio/voice recorder. It has a built in flash, rechargeable battery, it writes to an SD RAM chip, and it has a nice USB and audio/video interface to connect it to your computer or TV.
There was one more thing, oh yeah, the WP in the name stands for Waterproof. That's right, this little baby is a waterproof camera. So not only is it a nice little compact digital camera, it is also able to take pictures underwater. Or more importantly for me, it is able to get wet, banged around, and occasionally get dropped into a river or a large amount of water without the camera being ruined.
Now if your vacations do not consist of sitting around in hotel rooms, or museums, other climate controlled environments, this may be a great camera for you. So not only don't you have to worry about your camera getting wet because you are either playing around water, or got caught in a sudden down pour or a snow storm; but the camera also takes some really decent images. Like the ones that we took over the weekend while I was kayaking with my girlfriend over in Indiana by Rockville.
This last week I took Friday off, and my girlfriend and I took a long weekend getaway. We ended up renting a small home right on Raccoon Lake near Rockville, Indiana. You know, quaint little bungalow, fireplace, private deck, large sliding glass doors in all of the rooms facing the lake, and a blizzard. What more could you want, except the last day was bright and sunny and a perfect day for hiking. I also took about 300 photos. Anyway, at some point I will get most of them up my web site, but for now I have a sneak peak of what they are like. If you click on the image below it will link you to a short slide show of several photos that I took on the trip. In some of the pictures you will see a cute woman in a brown parka, yes I do know her, and I am not just stalking her. That is my girlfriend, and yes that is me in the black parka. I tried to include people in many of the images to give a scale how big the rock formations and ice flows are, because sometimes the objects look much smaller than they actually are.
All in all, it was a great weekend. The reservations were locked in two weeks before we went so there was no way to have planned the 12 inches of snow that hit on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, and the freezing temps that hit a few days before we went, or the four inches that hit the Saturday after we arrived. What we ended up with was this great winter wonderland and it will all be gone by next weekend since we are now getting 40° - 50° temps and most of the ice that you see in the images is either already gone, or will be gone over the next few days. It was one of those once in a lifetime things that could not be planned. A week ago none of it was there, and it will all be gone next weekend. Anyway, feel free to click on the image below to see a dozen or so images from the trip.

The entrance to the train station in West Lafayette, Indiana. I shot this picture using a long exposure and a very warm light setting.
Show us something shiny.

A reflection of a suspended walking bridge that can be found in Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. The water was calm enough that day to have a great reflective quality to it.
It really is a great place to take photos and to go trail hiking. But you would never guess that from the images on their website. Seriously, it is a wonderful park, but the web site makes it look like a run down mud pit.
